The Ajanta & Ellora cave-mountain complexes

Hindu Voice UK, October 2006

The Ajanta & Ellora sculptures are some of the greatest monuments created by mankind, consisting of caves and temples, which used to be a centre of learning for sadhus and monks. The amazing thing is that all of the scultures are monolithic, carved solely out of the mountains and caves without being severed at all. They were built in ancient times, but fell into disuse, and became submerged by dust and dirt, until a British officer rediscovered them by accident in 1819.
