Makar Sankranti

Hindu Voice UK, January 2007

Makar Sankranti, also called Pongal, is a popular Hindu festival that celebrates the regeneration of nature that takes place as winter begins to wane and nature enters into a phase of gradual re-growth. Kite flying is a major part in the celebration of the festival. Unlike most Hindu festivals, for which the dates go by the lunar calendar, the date for Makar Sankranti is set by the solar calendar and therefore is on the same day every year - January 14th. This gallery shows Makar Sankranti being celebrated.
