:: NEWS :: The case of Revathi, a Hindu woman forcibly classed as Muslim under Malaysian law Hindu Voice UK, July 2007 Please
see the following YouTube link to Al-Jazeera for an excellent comprehensive
coverage of the issues surrounding Revathi:
According to Ms.Massosai, her parents were Hindus who had converted to Islam before she was born and named her Siti Fatimah Karim, but she herself was raised a Hindu by her grandmother and was never a practicing Muslim. In 2004 she married a Hindu named Suresh in a Hindu wedding and later gave birth to a daughter, who she is currently not allowed to see. Revathi’s ordeal began when her and her husband tried to get their daughter a birth certificate. The Malaysian authorities noticed her Muslim birth name on the certificates, and hence objected, with the argument that Islamic Shariah law (which applies to the country’s Muslims) does not recognize such marriages. Also apostasy from Islam is not acceptable by the law, thus she was forcibly sent to a rehabilitation center. The officials had also seized their daughter from Suresh and handed her over to Revathi’s Muslim mother. Currently Suresh is not allowed to both his wife and daughter. After being released Revathi had alleged that she suffered mental and physical torture during the detention, she said that "They asked me to be a Muslim and they threatened to send my daughter to a welfare home if I defied them," and "They also served me beef, knowing I don't take beef as a Hindu." The news comes in the wake of a spate of other allegations by Malaysia’s Hindu minority over what they see as the ever increasing Islamisation of Malaysia, some of these allegations include stories covered previously by Hindu Voice UK – the rise of temple demolitions and the contriversy over burial of Mr.Moorthy. It appears that these are not isolated phenomena and are increasingly becoming more common in Malaysia. Picture shows Revathi together with her child, from BBC website.
