Gallery: The Amarnath Pilgrimage

Hindu Voice UK, August 2007

Situated in the beautiful mountains of Jammu and Kashmir, Amarnath is a cave temple and one of the most popular Hindu pilgrimage sites. According to legend, it is the cave where Lord Shiva revealed the secrets of life and eternity to Parvathi. Hundreds of thousands of Hindus flock to the site every year, to see the natural Shiva Lingam which forms there from ice every year. Usually the Lingam begins to form from July, and lasts until August. Despite being a politically volatile state, with a serious terrorist problem for the past 18 years, the number of visitors has not declined, although a number of pilgrims are killed or injured by bomb blasts every year.
