Although well received by most, the song has ignited the wrath of some Hindus, who claim that the lyrics and especially the video that accompany the song are too explicit and sexual to be placed alongside the holy names of Krishna and Rama. Some Buddhists have also complained, as a statue of Buddha features prominently in the video. Some have even gone so far as to ask for a total ban on the film! The Eccha Foundation has moved a civil court seeking a ban on the film, and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has written a letter seeking the intervention of the Indian government. Amongst other complaints about the song, the letter stated: “The song shows vulgarly dressed semi-nude girls and lead actor dancing suggestively on the pious chant of ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ and imitating Lord Rama, Lord Krishna and Hindu saints insultingly… Please note that this is a grave insult to the religious sentiments of crores of Hindus. You are, therefore, advised to stop airing/telecasting this derogatory song and the trailer/release of the movie Bhool Bhulaiyaa with immediate effect on all channels of broadcasting.” So is this video really insulting to Hinduism? Certainly, the popularity of the song suggests that most Hindus are not offended. In the case of Bhool Bhulaiyaa, if viewed in the context of the whole film one could argue that the film has a pro-religion message and rather than mocking Hinduism actually portrays Hinduism in a positive way. But at the same time it can be seen why the video to the song would raise some disapproving eyebrows. What do you think? What
