Hindu Voice UK, March 2006

Welcome back to Hindu Voice UK. Earlier this month brought very sad and shocking news for all of us. Most of you will have heard about the serial bomb blasts in Varanasi (also known as Kashi or Benares), one of the holiest cities and most frequently visited pilgrim centre for Hindus. It was on Tuesday March 7th that the triple blasts occurred, timed to coincide with a large gathering of Hindus for the worship of Lord Hanuman. Four unexploded bombs were later recovered in other parts of the city. At least 20 have been killed and 70 injured. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have suffered in the incident.

Dear Editor,

Re: Britney Spears has baby son blessed at Hindu temple. How shallow on everyone's part. So Britney is a Hindu and desires to have her son raised as a Hindu? How inconsiderate and ignorant of the so-called "Hindu priests" to sanction this non-sense. "Tomorrow" Britney will probably be "into" Kabbala or the next fad.

Dear Madam and Sir,

Thank you for e-mailing me the Hindu Voice magazine. It is impressive beginning and I look forward to the future issues. I will be very grateful if it does not become political or biased in any sense.

I especially found Dilip Lakhani's interview quite interesting and thank you very much for the Gayatri Mantra explanation.

With regards to directory of temples, I am sure there are quite a few small temples that have been missed out. I go to Jalaram Mandir in Greenford, albeit not regularly. There is also another Jalaram Mandir in Hounslow, which I believe, is family run. I also recall attending an opening ceremony of a Hindu Mandir in Bristol some 27 or 28 years ago.

Good luck and Best wishes

Dear Editor,

The Hindu Voice UK site is a really good informative site for young Hindu's
out there. I haven't come across a Hindu site for the UK people as of yet since I
started browsing the web back in 97/98!

The student story on university campus was very good and I'm sure a lot of
people go through similar experiences; Natasha's story can show other
young Hindus how to be strong when faced with similar experiences.

The tattoo article was interesting! I have two religious tattoo's myself and
see them as some sort of identity of whom I am to people! And author is
right about making impressions on people etc. But I'm sure there is a link
between judgement and identification.

Excellent newsletter, keep the site coming.

Namaste and aloha!

Today the issue of HinduVoice arrived on my computer from the UK. We
want to congratulate you on this significant undertaking. You have done it in a way that captures the contemporary Hindu's heart, and that is so important. And you have taken on important issues of the day. The human faces and real people stories are engaging, and we hope you will continue in that direction. Send us more!

Namaste,

Congratulations on the excellent Hindu Voice website. I look forward to watching it get even better over the next few issues. I have a question.

What is the attitude of Hindus towards non-Indians who adopt certain aspects of Hindu culture and religion? I'm an African-American who 'discovered' the Dharma through Ashtanga Yoga. Something just clicked the first time I recited the Invocation to Patanjali in Sanskrit.

The deeper my practice goes, the more reverence I have for Bharat Mata (Mother India). Is it possible to take Indophiles seriously?

Namasthe: I am impressed by your magazine. You have indeed undertaken the Herculean task of putting together so many pieces of the Hindu jigsaw puzzle in proper order. I wish you Godspeed in your endeavours.

It will be indeed a great boon, if you can publish insightful stories of Hindu youngsters first hand experiences with "cultural clash" in their day-to-day lives. Those articles will be an eye-opener to all. So much about the 2nd generation Hindus is an enigma even to their own parents.

Thanks

Ed Viswanathan
