British Hindus have expressed concerns over proposals for racial profiling of South Asians by UK police and security services. Ramesh Kallidai, Secretary General of the Hindu Forum said that it is diabolical that British Hindus and Sikhs be subject to racial profiling by UK police and security services just because 23 alleged terrorists, mostly Pakistani Muslims, have been arrested in the alleged conspiracy to detonate liquid bombs on trans-Atlantic airliners flying from Heathrow. Speaking to Hindu Voice UK, Kallidai also expressed dissatisfaction at the failure of the police services to give provision for extra security to Hindu temples amid growing fears of a backlash by white youths, who cannot differentiate the different faith or ethnic groups that comprise the Asian umbrella. Expressing similar views, Bhimji Vekaria, chairman of the Metropolitan Police Hindu Association said, "When a Hindu temple seeks police protection it is not given as much importance. If a mosque was to seek similar help, the police are there instantly. Their thinking is that Hindus are essentially a peaceful lot. "We recognise that in the wake of the July 7 bombings and recent
anti-terror arrests, Muslims are central to dealing with the situation.
But when it comes to a backlash, there is no distinction between Hindus
and Muslims. Therefore it is important that we are not isolated."
