Hindu imagery in nightclubs

Hindu Voice UK, September 2006

With the mounting campaign against the extensive use of Hindu imagery in 'Blagclub', the question has once again arisen about the rights and wrongs of artistic licence to use sacred imagery outside of traditional settings.

Hindu campaign groups view Blag Club's use of Hindu imagery as exploitive. According to them, the presence of deities in a place such as a nightclub, where intoxicants are widely used, is unacceptable, cheapening, and contributes to negative stereotypes of Hinduism.

On the other hand, the Blag Club management have stated that they cannot see how anybody could possibly find their decorative use of Hindu Gods and Goddesses offensive, and that if anything they are promoting Hinduism though their use of such images. Furthermore, they have stated that nobody has the right to tell them what to do.
